Introduction to Ambitious Science Teaching
This foundational session introduces the principles and goals of Ambitious Science Teaching (AST). Participants will explore AST’s emphasis on equity, student-centered learning, and scientific practices. Through interactive discussions, attendees will identify challenges in their current teaching practices and learn how AST strategies can address these. The session concludes with actionable steps for observing and reflecting on student engagement in their classrooms
Strategy 1 – Eliciting and Engaging Students’ Ideas
This session focuses on the first core strategy of AST: eliciting and building on students’ prior knowledge. Participants will learn practical techniques such as using phenomena, open-ended questions, and collaborative tools like concept maps and think-pair-share activities. They will design their own engagement activities tailored to their classrooms and leave with a plan to implement these strategies in their teaching.
Strategy 2 – Supporting Ongoing Changes in Thinking
Dive into scaffolding and promoting sensemaking in science learning. This workshop equips participants with methods to guide students as they refine their ideas and deepen their understanding. Techniques such as inquiry-based tasks, graphic organizers, and sentence starters will be explored. Attendees will practice creating scaffolds for complex concepts and learn how to foster a dynamic classroom environment that encourages continuous intellectual growth.
Strategy 3 – Pressing for Evidence-Based Explanations
Learn how to cultivate scientific argumentation and evidence-based reasoning in your students. This session introduces practical tools and strategies to help students construct and defend their explanations. Participants will work with real-world datasets to design engaging activities and gain strategies to foster critical thinking and discourse in their classrooms.
Supporting Students with Learning Disabilities (3h)
This workshop focuses on practical strategies for teaching students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, ADHD, and dyscalculia. Educators will explore techniques for creating supportive learning environments, adapting instruction, and fostering student success.
